Introducing: The Friendship Series

This wholly unoriginal name is intended to be as such; simple, unguarded, enough. Meant to be a very pure reflection and wholesome tribute to one of the most special, yet under-addressed, forces within my life. They say family is everything, and it is. I would count the friends this series is dedicated to among those who have raised me, my family by choice.

The friendship series is an ode to those I miss the most, both acutely since moving to Hawaii and more generally since the beginning of the pandemic. To a brilliant group of humans who have buttressed my growth and joy year after year as I grew from fledgling human to something more closely resembling who I’ve always wanted to be. A global pandemic has stolen us physically further apart, but these people are in my thoughts now more than ever.

This series aims to capture the broad and unique responses my most mindful friends are having to the year of 2020, inclusive of perspectives on the mundane (daily routines, quiet thoughts) to the profound (racial justice, climate change, politics). It became an opportunity for me to connect with my people, and for those who participated to stop and reflect on this time in a concrete way. I’m excited to take a step back from my own musings to showcase their words and inner thoughts.

My friends have tried to speak with honesty and humanity, and I’ll do my best to render their words justice. Just as they’ve given me peace and community in the times I've needed it most, I hope their answers will provide support and communion to those of you who read them.
